Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to consult a nephrologist?
Not necessarily — you can consult directly for kidney-related concerns. That said, if your primary doctor has already run tests or has specific concerns, sharing that history helps make the first visit more productive.
What should I bring to my first consultation?
Bring any recent blood and urine test reports, a list of current medications, your medical history (including diabetes, blood pressure, or prior kidney issues), and any imaging or biopsy reports if you have them.
At what stage of kidney disease should I see a nephrologist?
Ideally as soon as reduced kidney function or protein/blood in urine is identified — even in earlier stages. Early nephrology involvement allows more time to identify causes, slow progression, and plan ahead if advanced care is ever needed.
Can dialysis be avoided if CKD is caught early?
In many cases, yes — early diagnosis and consistent management of blood pressure, blood sugar, and other risk factors can significantly slow or, in some cases, stabilize CKD progression, delaying or avoiding the need for dialysis.
Do you provide second opinions on existing treatment plans?
Yes — second opinions are welcome, particularly for complex cases involving glomerular disease, dialysis planning, or transplant evaluation. Bringing your existing reports and treatment history helps make the consultation more useful.
